Packing Service in a Multi-Level Apartment Building: How to Handle Challenges Unique to Your Situation

Living in an apartment building that is multiple stories high may not seem that difficult, especially when your building has fully functional elevators. However, should you decide to move, your current location has some unique challenges. Packing service in a multi-story apartment building means you will need more than just extra bodies. Here are some of those unique packing and moving challenges, and how to handle them.

Elevator Space

Moving everything from your floor to the elevator and then to the ground floor seems like it would not be a challenge at all. On the contrary, elevators only have so much room, which means you will make lots of trips, and you have to accommodate other tenants' comings and goings via elevator too. There is also the problem of not being able to stack your boxes floor to ceiling in the elevators because they could cause injury when the elevator lurches up or down.

Finally, the biggest challenge with using one elevator is that there is a weight restriction in the elevator car. Even though the weight restriction exists for the number of people of average weight who can ride in the car, the amount of weight the car can be encumbered with is the same, regardless of what is loaded onto the elevator (i.e., people or boxes of stuff). If your building has a service elevator, ask your apartment manager if you can use the service elevator to help you move all of your things down to the ground level.

In-House Packing Service

Some apartment buildings are managed by companies that provide tenants with packing service in time of need. They may also offer a final clean-out service if you need to leave in a hurry. The unique challenge here is securing these services far enough in advance so that they are available to help you on the day of your move. Talk to your apartment manager to see if you can get some extra help and whether or not these services are available in your building.

Extra Helpers

Moving at a constant speed so that you can get everything out of the building quickly is another challenge. You should have three or four people loading and unloading the elevator and loading and unloading the truck. Another three or four people should be constantly packing, and you will have to specify this requirement with your packing service. That way, you have a constant flow between packing boxes in your apartment and movement of those boxes out, down, and onto the truck.
